E. T. Hurley Signed 1914 Etching "Christ Church"

Item Details

An antique 1914 signed etching titled Christ Church by-well listed Cincinnati artist Edward Timothy Hurley (1869 – 1950), hand-signed in 1915. The image depicts the historic Christ Church Cathedral of downtown Cincinnati at east 4th and Sycamore streets. Artist signature and date are printed in plate and hand-signed in pencil to the lower right. This print is mounted behind antique hand-rolled glass in a simple antique wood frame, likely original, as indicated by the dilapidated antiqueClosson Art Galleries label to the verso. Hurley studied at Xavier University, then at The Cincinnati Art Academy under the tutelage of Frank Duveneck. Hurley joined the famed Rookwood Pottery in 1896, his work received a gold medal at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis and his pottery and vellum plaques are avidly collected today. A prolific artist outside of his work at Rookwood, Hurley received praise for his printed work and was listed in the French index “The Dictionaire des Peintres, Sculptuers, Dessinateurs et Graveurs Benezit”. He was also a sculptor, working in bronze to create decorative pieces.
