Jan Cornelis Hofman Oil Painting on Canvas Board Figurative Landscape

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas board of a figurative landscape by listed Dutch artist Jan Cornelis Hofman (1889-1966). The Post-Impressionist style work depicts a dirt road along a verdant riverside. A lone figure rides a horse on the path, coming towards the viewer. To the lower right corner, signed with the artist’s alias, ‘Jean Hofman’. To the verso is a label for the F. H. Bresler Co. Presented in a gilt frame without glass.

Hofman was best-known for his Post-Impressionist style Flanders landscapes. While born in the Netherlands, he spent most of his career in Belgium. Although not formally trained, Hofman began decorative drawings as a child before moving onto house painting and painting Delft porcelain. Hofman would have a productive career, creating over 7,000 artistic works. His illuminated landscapes gained market and public attention in Europe and North America. Nearly two-thirds of his works he considered “commercial”, created solely to be sold in galleries. However, Hofman had a personal distaste for his commercial works, often signing with an alias to create a separation from his art. This repulsion manifested in distaste for his works being publicized and exhibited. Today, many of Hofman’s works can be found in private collections.
