Chinese Earthenware Pidan Egg Pot With Dragons

A Chinese egg pot used for making pidan (皮蛋), or “Century Eggs.” This urn features a brown glazed, stoneware urn base with a raised and etched motif of dragons. The vessel has a scalloped rim and green glazed interior. Pots of this type are used to make pidan, which are preserved eggs that resulting in a dark green yolk surrounded by a dark brown, translucent jelly. The preservation process uses clay, ash, salt, rice hulls, and quicklime and can take several weeks or months. Has a raised, molded mark on bottom. Mid to late 20th century.
