A mid 19th-century oil painting on board of a woman and child. The work depicts the pair in a three-quarter lengths portrait in an exterior setting. The woman pulls cards and lace out of a basket on her lap. Unsigned by the artist. To the verso is a red inscription, ‘Sarah Norton / 1853’, a manufacturer’s label, and an illegible graphite inscription to the label. Presented in a gesso and giltwood frame without glass.
Condition
- fair; gouging to the board verso from nails; chipping to gesso on frame, focused in upper left and upper right corners; splits in wood frame in upper left and lower right corners; gap between board and frame along upper edge; dirt accumulated all over the surface of the work, including the faces; craquelure throughout; drying cracks to child’s cheek and forearm; flecks of white and blue paint along woman’s skirt; gold tone paint flecks throughout painting; under a black light, the work is clean.
