A late 19th-century oil painting on canvas of a Dutch scene. Within the nocturnal scene, a lone figure walks away from a windmill. The silhouette of the figure and windmill are illuminated by a bright light emanating behind the clouds. Created in 1885, the work is marked with the date to the lower right corner. Unsigned by the artist. Presented without a frame.
Condition
- fair; four stretcher bar marks on the canvas; some cracking to paint layers along edges of stretcher bars; craquelure to paint layers; under black light, over-painting present to the lower left corner and along bottom edge, quarter-size spots above date, scattering where windmill and house touch, the date is clean; four dime to nickel-sized repair patches to verso; two dime-sized circles of wax to verso, likely repairing dimples in canvas.
