A oil painting on canvas titled Sundown in Winter by well-listed artist Albion Harris Bicknell (American; 1837 – 1915). This painting depicts a forest with large conifer trees with a blanket of snow covering the ground. The forest is illuminated by the glow of the setting sun in the background. This piece is signed to the lower right and is housed without glass in a gilt tone frame.

Albion Harris Bicknell was born in Turner, Maine and began his artist training at the Lowell Institute in Boston around 1855. During 1860 Bicknell exhibited for the first time at the Boston Athenaeum. That same year Bicknell settling in Paris, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and worked in the studio of Thomas Couture (1815-1879). He returned to Boston establishing his own studio and started to exhibit his work yearly at the Boston Athenaeum. Not long after Bicknell fell ill and did not leave his home for twelve years but kept up his artistic activity. His wife, Elizabeth, started to host his annual exhibition held at Malden studio on the same property as the home. During 1880 Bicknell start to manage a summer sketching school.

Condition

- craquelure throughout the composition; scuffs are present to the frame; under blacklight pin head sized areas of paint loss are present along the top of the composition.
