A watercolor painting on paper by listed Ohio artist Emma Mendenhall (1873 – 1964). This impressionist piece depicts a tranquil maritime landscape with a prominent ship stationed on the harbor of an extensive body of water surrounded by forested hills. Signed by the artist to the lower left corner. Presented behind glass, beneath a white and gray double mat, housed in a wood frame with a golden tone finish and red undertones. A framer’s label is affixed to the verso.

Emma Mendenhall is known for her impressionist watercolor portraits and landscapes. She acquired her formal artistic training in her hometown at the Cincinnati Art Academy, painting under the likes of historically renowned artists Frank Duveneck, John Twachtmann, Henry Farny, Joseph Henry Sharp and Dixie Selden. Upon graduating, Mendenhall further pursued her artistic career and moved to Paris, refining her technique while continuing her education at the Julian Academy, where she studied with William Merritt Chase and in doing so established her signature painting style for which she is recognized today. Her paintings have been exhibited at many institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Panama Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco and at the Paris Salon, among others.
