John Earhart Oil Painting on Canvas Board of Landscape

An oil painting on canvas board of a landscape created in 1929 by listed Ohio-based artist John Earhart (1853-1938). Portrayed with gestural strands of thick impasto, this work features a prominent tree in the left foreground and a grassy terrain filled with colorful indiscernible foliage. A pastel sky filled with blues, purples, and pink hovers above. The painting is signed and dated in black to the lower right. A label from the Traxel Galleries for an exhibition in 1930 is adhered to the verso. The descriptive label includes a quote by the artist. A label from Rottinghaus Frame Co. Gallery is also adhered to the verso. The painting is presented in a gold-tone wood frame with a linen liner.

John Earhart was born in Columbus, Ohio then settled in Cincinnati in 1880, where he became known for his printmaking and landscape paintings. After retiring from his printing business, he dedicated much of his time to painting in his studio along the Ohio River. His work has been exhibited at numerous art institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, to name a few.

- some wear to frame including stains and discoloration throughout; some small chips on outer border of frame; larger chip to lower left edge of frame; minor stains and discoloration throughout liner.
