Item Details

A limited edition etching on paper titled Swing Screen by well-listed artist James Rosenquist (American; b. 1933), published in 1979. This print depicts three forms oriented horizontally. The form on the right is a red circle encompassed by a purple border. The central form is a deep green circle with small green cross marks. The right form is rendered with five nails outlined in red with a triangle overlayed render in the primary colors. This piece is a numbered artist proof; it’s numbered 14 out of an edition of 15. The artist has signed and dated the piece to the lower right with title and edition to the lower left. Housed float mounted within a clear acrylic case.

A leading figure in the American Pop Art movement, Rosenquist is best known for his large-scale oil paintings. His mother was an avid painter and encouraged her son’s interest in art. In 1952, he studied painting at the University of Minnesota and in 1955 studied at the Art Students League in New York. Like many in the Pop Art movement, Rosenquist began his career as a commercial artist painting billboards. Influenced by his background in commercial art, he would pull imagery from advertisements, periodicals, and other popular imagery. Rosenquist worked in a variety of mediums, including printing, painting, collage, and drawing. His works are held in a variety of public and private institutions, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and more.
