An oil painting on canvas of an abstract still life, created in 1942 by listed American artist Bessie Boris (1917-1993). Portrayed with vibrant colors, sweeping lines, and expressionistic brushstrokes, this still life arrangement includes a sinuous multi-colored vase, eating utensils, a grater, and other kitchenware set on a black surface partially covered with a pinkish purple cloth. Forms are accented with neon colors and delineated with bold outlines, emphasizing a sense of flatness throughout the composition. The painting is signed and dated in red to the lower right. It is presented in a distressed brown and green wood frame with a striped relief pattern.
Born in Pennsylvania, Boris completed her art training at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and the Art Student’s League in New York City. She studied under renowned modern artists Vaclav Vytlacil and George Grosz, and became known for her rich colors and expressionistic abstractions. Boris’s work has been displayed at a number of renowned art institutions including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Denver Art Museum, to name a few.
