A circa 1900 Japanese chest on chest. This isho-kasane dansu chest is comprised of cypress wood and pine and dates from the late Meiji period (1868-1912). It was designed with cast iron round lock plates, mokko style drawer pulls with backplates, ogee corner plates, L-braces, strap hinges and a raised, footed stand and features three long drawers, one medium sized drawer and a door leading to two smaller drawers. All of the drawers have locks with each chest including handles to the sides for bamboo poles to transport them. These chests were designed for travel and to store female silk kimono and valuable items.

Condition

- cracks, splits to the wood, rust, wear to the L-brackets; scratches and scuffs typical of age are noted; there is no key.
