After Pierre Jules Mene Bronze Figural Group

Item Details

A bronze figural group sculpture after a work by Pierre Jules Mene (French, 1810-1879). The bronze sculpture shows a horseman in long formal coat, holding a tricorn hat in his right hand, with two hunting dogs, the group depicted on a naturalistic plinth. The bronze is signed P. .J. Mene to the bronze plinth and is mounted on a beveled oval green marble base.
Pierre Jules Mene, born in 1810 in Paris, is known as one of the most prolific animalier sculptors of all time. In 1849, his work was first shown in London. His speciality was small bronze works, which explains why no large scale pieces were commissioned during his lifetime. Mene is considered to have been the lost-wax or cire perdue casting expert of the Second Empire. He worked in the Juste Milieu, blending romantic and naturalist elements while retaining a degree of traditionalism.
