A signed Jorge Wilmot (Mexican, 1928 – 2012) fish sculpture, having a curved, dynamic form. This stoneware fish features hand-painted, pronounced scales and fins with red, tan, and green glossy glazes, with great detail in the eyes. Signed to the underside.
Jorge Wilmot is a celebrated Mexican ceramicist, and is credited with developing many of the standard techniques used in pottery making today throughout Mexico. His ceramic education included studies in Paris, Switzerland and Sweden, working with his contemporaries and creating innovative techniques for working with clay and glazes, including introducing high-firing and the blending of traditional Mexican design with Asian and modern influences. He established a teaching school in Tonalá, Jalisco, and the National Ceramic Museum. His work is known and displayed at galleries worldwide, and honors include the Galardon Presidencial del IV Premio Nacional de la Cerámica de Tlaquepaque and the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes. In 1994 he was named ‘Creator Emeritus’ by the National System of Creators of Art (SNCA), and two years later won the Fomento Cultural Banamex prize and the Premio Nacional en Artes y Tradiciones.
