Original 1970s Chen Mao School of Art Horse Hair Oil Painting
Item Details
An original 1970s Chen Mao School of Art horse hair oil painting. This textured painting features a fishing village scene, with mountainous background.
Mao Chen, for whom the school was named, never painted in oil or watercolor. His brother-in-law, Yen Lo Chu, who admired his drawing and teaching abilities, named the school after him. It was Chu who actually developed the horsehair technique; then hiring three graduate students to produce these unique oil paintings for the growing tourist, and export market.
The use of the Mao Chen signature, and the red character representing the school, was put on paintings starting in the 1970s, until the school was sold in the early 1980s.
