18th Century Jean-Baptiste Gonichon Brass Reflecting Telescope

A mid 18th-century to early 19th-century French brass Gregorian reflecting telescope by Jean-Baptise Charles Gonichon. The telescope has a cast speculum metal mirror to the interior, as well as the reflecting mirror, focusing rod to the side for the mechanism inside and tilt adjustment to the top of the base. The telescope is attached to a nicely formed brass pedestal stand which features three folding legs with delicate pad feet. It is marked at one end ‘Gonichon rue des Postes a Paris’.

Gonichon, affirmed as a marchand miroitier privilégié suivant la Cour in the middle of the 18th century, was a maker of fine (and now historic) scientific instruments. Beginning his career with his brother in law, Claude Paris, quickly after starting his own shop, providing the finest quality mirrors and scientific instruments in Paris. He was succeeded by his wife, Marie-Michelle Paris Gonichon in 1763.
