After Pierre Jules Mene Sterling Horse Sculpture "L' Accolade"
Item Details
An Italian weighted sterling silver equestrian horse sculpture titled L’ Accolade or Tachiani and Nedjebé, Arab Horses, after an 1880 work by Pierre Jules Mene (French, 1810-1879). The silver sculpture depicts an Arab mare and stallion, the horses shown on a naturalistic plinth. The horse group is mounted on a granite base. The piece is marked Italy Sterling 925 to the back.
Pierre Jules Mene, born in 1810 in Paris, is known as one of the most prolific animalier sculptors of all time. In 1849, his work was first shown in London. His speciality was small bronze works, which explains why no large scale pieces were commissioned. Mene is considered to have been the lost-wax or cire perdue casting expert of the Second Empire.
