A signed equestrian bronze after a work by Isidore Jules Bonheur (French, 1827-1901). The statue depicts a jockey astride his standing horse, the jockey with riding cane in his right hand. The finely patinaed statue is signed to the naturalistic rectangular bronze base. The piece is mounted on a dark green marble plinth.
Isidore Jules Bonheur was born in Bordeaux and studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. By 1848, Bonheur was focused on his sculptural work, winning medals at the Paris Salon in the 1860s. Bonheur had a keen eye for the natural world and his sculptures reflect his commitment to the Realist School with refined and sensitive depictions of animal movements and personalities.
