A large hand-knotted and signed wool Kashan area rug. This ornate rug features a light yellow four pointed medallion, centered inside larger light blue rectilinear and dark blue-black ogee medallions. It has a signature or Koranic verse in a cartouche to one edge. The red field, along with the dark blue-black and light yellow spandrels, are embellished with an arabesque of floral, palmette and lancet leaves in shades of blue, pink, yellow and green. A dark blue main border with a floral and palmette motif, and off-white and light blue guard borders with carnation patterns complete the design. The rug is finished with red side cords and a white fringe at the shorter ends. Unmarked.
