Exquisite Russian Silver Torah Set

Item Details

An astonishing piece of Judaica, in the form of a nearly complete 19th-century Russian silver Sefer Torah set, comprised of a pair of rimonim, breastplate, and yad. Made in Moscow, by an unascribed maker, the set is comprised of silver, ranging in purity from 90-94%, though hallmarked as 84. Strikingly, and lovingly hand-wrought, the rimonim and breastplate are designed with parcel gilding, the rimonim with a tapered form, with layers of foliate motifs, rising to a bird finial atop each, hung all around with rows of gold plated silver bells. The breastplate, similarly designed, features the lions of Judah standing astride the עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדִבְּרוֹת, which is made of hinged doors opening to a recess. Beneath it, a slot and frame to hold interchangeable placards for different holidays. Engraved beautifully, the piece also features a long chain. The yad, of a differing design and of a lower quality silver is simply designed, with a Yiddish name engraved upon the side. The set is contained within what is presumably the original cardboard case, with fitted velvet interior.

In the ritual function of the synagogue, the Sefer Torah is ornamented with a fitted vestment and either a silver Torah crown or finials and shield. The use of either associates the Torah with royalty and pronounces its central, sacred place in Jewish life.

Condition

Some minor wear to the set, a few bells and one bird missing from the rimonim.
