A mixed media on canvas titled Heavy Duty by well-listed American artist John Stango (Philadelphia, b. 1958). The work depicts a repeated image of American professional boxer and activist Muhammad Ali (1942-2016). With a rosette texture, the boxer’s image is printed onto the canvas and painted over top. Signed by the artist to the lower right and verso lower left. Presented without a frame.
Stango is best known for his Pop Art style paintings. He earned his BA in Painting and Graphic Design from Temple University. His self-coined “American Muscle Car” style utilizes silkscreen printing and oil painting in conjunction with juxtaposed pop culture imagery and thick brushstrokes. His inspirations and subject matter include popular celebrity icons, advertising, mid-century modernism, and more. Stango currently works in his warehouse studio outside of Philadelphia. A solo exhibition of his works will be held at the Artist’s Proof Gallery in Washington D.C. from March 8 to April 16, 2017.
