An oil painting on canvas still life by Edgar Yaeger (American, 1904-1997), executed in 1934. Sitting upon a table is a Hamburg hat and a dark bottle surrounded by a round wooden cane, glass and a newspaper. The composition is portrayed in a post-impressionist style with vibrant colors, layered impasto, dark outlines, and distorted perspective throughout the composition. It is signed and dated to the lower right corner and inscribed to the verso. Presented in a gilt and gesso Louis XV style frame with highly ornate, pierced moulding.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Edgar Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
