Edgar Yeager Oil Painting on Board "Warrior"

Item Details

An oil painting on board entitled Warrior by well-listed American artist Edgar Yeager (1904-1997), created in 1958. This work features a man holding a shield and sword fitting a lion in an arena. Two figures are rendered in the background to the left in a Greco-Roman structure. The red curtains present to the structure as well as the upper right implies this is a stage production. The composition is portrayed in a post-impressionist style with vibrant colors, thick dark outlines, distorted perspective, and an overall sense of flatness throughout the composition. The piece is signed and dated to the lower right and a label from Cincinnati Art Galleries, LLC is present to the verso. Housed without glass in a painted grey and white frame.

Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso, and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
