Antique "Holy Face of Jesus Christ" Engraving on Silk with Gratis

Item Details

An original antique engraving on ivory silk after an original image by very well-listed Italian artist Antonio Puccinelli (1822 – 1897), titled Vera Effigies Sacri Vultus Domini Nostri Jesu Christi. The print depicts the face of Jesus Christ layered over an image of Veronica’s Veil, a veil that hangs in the Vatican and was allegedly used to wipe tears from Jesus’ face on the cross. This print has the blue Papal ‘Gratis’ seal printed to the lower left, confirming that this piece touched the original Veronica’s Veil, touched the wood of the True Cross, and touched the spear that pierced Jesus’ side. A red Cardinal seal is stamped to the lower right. The piece is matted in textured white and presented behind antique hand-rolled glass in a wooden frame with cast surface embellishments and silver tone finish. A hanging wire is attached to the verso.

Condition

- silk is yellowed and has light ripping and creasing across. Cracking and some loss to frame’s finish.
