A gouache painting on paper titled Fancy Dancer by Carl Woodring (Wasaba Shinga) (1920-1985). This gouache painting depicts a Native American man dancing barefoot against a cream tone background wearing a yellow, red, and sky blue feathered headdress, a sky blue beaded vest, a lavender loincloth, and tan ankle cuffs. The piece is signed by the artist to the lower right and dated 1959. It is presented behind a cream tone mat in protective plastic wrapped to the front. Handwritten in pencil to the verso is Carl Woodring’s address followed by ‘Professional, Fancy Dancer, For Sale’ as well as a scratched out price and the words ‘Jack. 1965’.

Born in Kansas, Carl Woodring spent most of his life in Oklahoma where he began painting Native American inspired compositions. He found success after entering his work in local Native American art competitions, notably the Philbrook annual competition, and his work was exhibited in several European countries during the 1960s.
