A 1750 French hand tinted and engraved map titled Brittanicae Insulae in quibus Albion sen Britannia Major… engraved and published by Robert de Vaugondy from Vaugondy’s The Atlas Universel. This antique piece is an exquisitely engraved and highly detailed large-scale map of Great Britain with beautifully delineated geological formations, topography, settlement names, and a lovely tinted title cartouche. The map was engraved by Vaugondy, a leading mapmaker in France during the 18th century. The atlas this map was created for was produced by integrating older information with more modern surveyed maps. The Vaugondys verified their measurements by referring to astronomical observations.In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV. This handsome antique map is displayed under glass in a light-washed wooden frame with gilt filet liner. The map is wired to the back.
