Edgar Yaeger Gouache Painting on Brown Paper Abstract Still Life

A gouache painting on brown paper abstract still life by well-listed American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904-1997), created in 1986. Depicted is a bundle of grapes rendered on a plate and table. Squares with lines are presented along the background possibly referencing text on paper. The piece is signed and dated to the lower right in graphite. Mounted to white foam core with mounting corners and wrapped in acetate.

Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
