1721 German Küfer Zunftpokal

Item Details

A 1721 German zunftpokal, or ‘guild cup.’ Cups such as this were prized by wealthy guilds of artisans and aristocratic master craftsmen in the 17th and 18th Centuries, and they were used to welcome honored guests or as part of other meeting rituals. This early 18th Century piece is handmade from pewter, and it was crafted for a Küfer, or ‘cooper’ who made barrels and tubs, as a wedding anniversary gift. The lid is crowned with a pewter knight in full armor, and the cup below is ringed with acanthus leaf patterns at the top, midsection and foot. Near the top are three raised soldier figures with lion heads between them, and three shields hang from the jaws of these lions. One shield shows a hand etched barrel design while the other two display the engraved German text ‘Thren Eltern zur Goldenen Hochzeit, 1721’ and ‘gervidmet von den danKbaren Kindern, 1721.’ Per consignor, these translate to ‘For their parents on their golden wedding, 1721’ ‘Given from their thankful children, 1721.’
