E. T. Hurley Etching on Paper "George Elliston"

An etching on paper titled George Elliston by well listed Cincinnati, Ohio printmaker and Rookwood pottery artist Edward Timothy (E.T.) Hurley (1869-1950), dated 1927. The print depicts an office space with a large curved vase contiguous to a pile of books, sand clock, and a teapot placed atop an elevated surface adjacent to a window. Included, the fragment of a poem reading ‘But I can look on beauty and never got my fill’ inscribed to the upper area and with the name of the author ‘George Elliston’ inscribed to the lower area of the composition. The print is signed and dated in plate to the lower margin. Mounted beneath white matting encased in plastic. The item remains unframed.

Hurley was born in Cincinnati and studied at Xavier University and at The Cincinnati Art Academy under the tutelage of Frank Duveneck. Hurley joined the famed Rookwood Pottery in 1896, and his pottery and vellum plaques are avidly collected today. A prolific artist outside of his work at Rookwood, Hurley received praise for his printed work and bronze decorative pieces.
