1914 Buffalo Nickel, Rare Type 2

Item Details

A 1914-D Buffalo Nickel of rare type 2 Denver mintage. Designer: James Earle Fraser. Metal Content: 75% copper, 25% nickel. Diameter: 21.21 mm. Weight: 5 grams. Mintage: 3,912,000 at Denver. Coin design portrays the right profile of a Native American man to the obverse, and side profile of an American bison to the reverse which was highly acclaimed artistic masterpiece at the time of the first mint, struck for circulation from 1913 to 1938.

For the first few years of issue, the Buffalo Nickel was produced in two distinct types; type 1 (the original) depicts the buffalo standing on a raised mound, while type 2 (the revision) depicts the buffalo standing on a raised line of plane to position the inscription “FIVE CENTS” within a recessed area thereby limiting the quick wear while in circulation.
