A gouache painting on paper of owls under a sun by well-listed American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904-1997), created in 1975. The painting depicts a symmetrical, surreal composition featuring two owls holding a cloth underneath a red sun with a face. The work is signed and dated in graphite to the lower left. Presented in white matting and wrapped in acetate.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
