Original Igor Pantuhoff Original Oil on Canvas Painting
Item Details
An original oil on canvas painting by very well listed artist Igor Pantuhoff (1911 – 1972). ‘Born in Russia in 1911, he emigrated to the U.S. and studied with Hans Hoffman. For two years he and Lee Krasner lived together in New York, sharing an apartment with Harold and May Rosenberg. Pantuhoff allegedly left New York without telling Krasner and became known in the 1960s for his big-eye portraits. A brief obituary in the September 27, 1972, edition of The New York Times says Igor Pantuhoff died on Sept. 25, 1972. It describes him as a portrait painter “whose subjects had included Princess Grace of Monaco, Mrs. James V. Forrestal, Laurance S. Rockefeller and Anthony Drexel Duke (via askart).’ This painting features one of Igor’s ‘big-eye portraits,’ for which he was famous. The artist has painted an olive skinned beauty, topless, resting her elbows on a table and staring intently out of the canvas with an alluring ubiquitous gaze. Her features are softly rendered with the style that typifies Igor’s oeuvre. She is surrounded by energetic splotches of color, in beautiful impasto. The painting is signed to the bottom right hand corner and presented in an exquisite gilt wood frame.
