Original Gouache on Silk Portrait of Chinese Emperor

A large gouache on mounted silk portrait of a Chinese emperor, circa 1890-1910. This stunning image is typical of portraits painted of Chinese rulers during this time. It depicts the emperor seated on a large chair upholstered with skin of a wild cat. The emperor is dressed in an ornate gown and is wearing a dark wide-brimmed hat. The image is unsigned, and is painted on a bronze-toned silk. It is mounted on paper set on a linen-coverd background. The linen is presented in a black frame with gilt corner embellishments. A wire is attached to the verso for hanging.
Condition
- water damage across upper half of silk. Light surface damage across frame. Light discoloration on some areas of linen. There is a tear to silk in upper right-hand corner.
