Two Joel Otterson Original 1996 Watercolor Sketches from Series "10 Studies for Sculpture"

A pair of original graphite and watercolor sketches on paper by well-listed contemporary sculptor Joel Otterson (California/New York; born 1959), from his series of drawings titled 10 Studies for Sculpture, dated 1996. Each drawing depicts a detail or specific angle of an idea for the yet-to-be sculpture. One of the sketches includes a side detail of two reindeer hitched to swirling orange sleigh-like forms situated on green grass. The other depicts a congregation of yard gnomes clustered in a triangular pile, with a few geese and reindeer in the mix, resting on top of a blue platform, also situated on a green lawn. Each sketch is dated and initialed in pencil by the artist to the lower left and right corners. These pieces are unframed. Otterson attended Parsons School of Design in New York City, maintaining his study of art there for twenty years. In 1987, he was one of the youngest artists ever selected for a solo exhibition in the Projects Room of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. His work is included in the permanent collections of Cincinnati Art Museum, The Broad Foundation, The Israel Museum and many others.
