A lithograph on paper titled Rip Van Winkle by listed artist William Gropper (American, 1897-1977). Depicted is the title character from a short story by Washington Irving. In this scene Rip Van Winkle has fallen asleep after drinking with a group of men in the mountains later revealed to be ghosts. He awakes after twenty years to find that his beard has grown long and the American Revolution has occurred. The figure in this print is rendered in a wooded area with overgrown foliage and spiderwebs. Rip Van Winkle’s hair, beard, and eyebrows are rendered long and white. This piece is signed and titled in plate to the lower right and left corners. Housed behind glass in a black wooden frame.
