A hand-colored woodblock print of a church by well-listed American artist Edgar Yaeger (1904-1997), created in 1979. The print depicts Mission style church with trees on both sides. Each element is outlined with thick black lines and colored with gouache. It is signed and dated in pencil to the lower right margin. Presented in white matting and wrapped in acetate.
Known for his modern abstract style and his WPA murals of the Depression era, Yaeger was influenced by European modernists such as Paul Cézanne, Pablo Picasso and Giorgio de Chirico. Yaeger’s work has been exhibited at many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, among others.
