Tsuchiya Kōitsu Shin-Hanga Woodblock Print "Evening at Ushigome"
Item Details
A shin-hanga woodblock print on rice paper titled Evening at Ushigome (牛込神楽坂) by well-listed artist Tsuchiya Kōitsu (土屋光逸, Japan, 1870-1949). Originally published in 1939, the work depicts a nocturnal scene in the Tokyo neighborhood. A pair of figures walk down the road, carrying umbrellas. The artist’s printed ‘Kōitsu’ (光逸) signature and ‘Shinsei’ (真生) seal are printed in the lower right corner. Under a single layer of white mat, the item is presented under glass in a wood frame. To the verso is a framer’s label.
Kōitsu was a member of the shin-hanga (literally ‘new prints’) artistic movement. The early 20th-century movement revitalized the traditions of ukiyo-e printing and incorporated Western treatments of perspective and light. Kōitsu studied under master printer Kobayashi Kiyochika (小林清親, Japan, 1847-1915) and is most well-known for his colorful landscapes.
