Chinese Stone Carved Buddha Fragment

Item Details

A 19th century or earlier stone fragment, depicting the head of Buddha, and possibly meant to have been affixed to a temple wall. The face is well carved in relief to depict the serene face of Buddha, the reverse side flattened. The sculpture is housed on a 20th-century rotating wood base. A label from ‘Chait Galleries, New York’, prominent dealers of Asian antiquities, is affixed to the underside.

Condition

Some early breaks and the carving is a fragment of a larger work.
