Tibetan Gilt Bronze Statue of the Green Tārā

Item Details

A Tibetan bronze statue of the Green Tārā (Śyāmatārā), the “mother of liberation” and Buddha of enlightened activity. Tārā has five main forms, each of a different color, and is believed to protect her devotees from the many dangers that beset mankind. Here Green Tārā is portrayed in the Khadiravanī manifestation, finely cast with traces of overall gilding. She is seated upon a lotus pedestal in the lalitāsana pose with her right leg pendant and supported by a lotus bloom. Her right hand is held in the varada mudrā, the gesture of generosity and charity, and her left hand is raised the vitarka mudrā, the gesture of discussion. She holds the stems of utpala (blue lotus flowers) and padma (lotus flowers) which are in full bloom at her shoulders. She is dressed in the delicate ornaments, clothing, and five-leaf crown of a bodhisattva. The underside is marked with a repoussé double-vajra stamp, an indication that this statue was consecrated for use in a Buddhist temple.
