Two 1839 Japanese Wood Block Illustrated Booklets of "Journey to the West"

A pair of softcover booklets, published in Japan during the late Edo Period in 1839, as volume 37 and 40 out of a 40 volume series of the Japanese adaptation of the classic Chinese legend Journey to the West (Ehon Saiyuki). The story follows the ‘Monkey King’ Sun-Wukong as he protects the monk Xuanzang during his journey to India to retrieve Buddhist sutras. This version was published in four series from 1806-1839, illustrated with wood blocks by Taito II, student of the famous artist Hokusai. It is printed on rice paper with sewn bindings.
