Antique Restrike of 16th Century Stradanus Engraving "Tiberius"

Item Details

An antique restrike of an original late-16th century engraving titled Tiberius. The piece was Plate 3 of a series painted by extremely well-listed Flemish painter Stradanus (Jan Van der Straet) (1523-1605) from the artist’s series Imperatorum XII or The Twelve Emperors, depicting formal portraits of Roman emperors. The series was published by prolific Dutch printer Philip Galle (1537-1612) and the plates were created by Flemish printmaker Adriaen Collaert (circa 1560-1618). The print depicts the emperor on horseback on a pedestal, printed in fine black linework. The artists’ names are printed to the base of the pedestal, and the piece’s title and an accompanying poem are printed to the lower margin. The print is mounted to black backing and is presented behind black and gold églomisé matting in a composite frame with black and gold tone finish.
