Tom Levine Limited Edition Etching "Hague"

Item Details

A signed limited edition etching on paper titled Hague by renowned contemporary American artist Tom Levine (b. 1945), dated 1980. This work features two vertical green rectangles displayed closely together in the middle of the composition. The rectangle on the left is filled with gradations of a brighter green, whereas the rectangle on the right is filled with gradations of a less saturated green. Both rectangles reveal irregularity and smudges in the applied pigments. The juxtaposed rectangular planes of color recall the Color Field paintings of Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko. This work is numbered 6 out of an edition of 10, signed by hand, and dated to the lower margin. A descriptive label from the Roy Boyd Gallery is adhered to the verso. Presented under UV protective plexi and mounted on a white surface in a beige wood frame.

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Tom Levine is often recognized as an Abstract Expressionist. He is the younger brother of the Metropolitan Opera’s music director James Levine. Known for a focus on basic formal elements like line, color, and shape, the artist’s work has been collected and exhibited by many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Cincinnati Art Museum; and Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, to name a few. Levine currently lives and works in New York City.
