Tom Levine Oil Painting on Canvas "Opus 18 No. 7"

Item Details

An oil painting on canvas titled Opus 18 No. 7 by renowned contemporary American artist Tom Levine (b. 1945). This large work features two thick red vertical stripes placed close together in the middle of the canvas, against a cream background. The stripe on the left is a slightly darker shade of red than the stripe on the right. Other colors are subtly integrated within this abstract work. The artist’s large rectangular planes of color and hazy edges recall the Color Field paintings of Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko. This work is titled and signed to the verso.

Born and raised in Cincinnati, Tom Levine is the younger brother of the Metropolitan Opera’s music director James Levine. Known for a focus on basic formal elements like line, color, and shape, the artist’s work has been collected and exhibited by many institutions including the Museum of Modern Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Cincinnati Art Museum; and Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, to name a few. Levine currently lives and works in New York City.
