Sun Wukong the Monkey King Collection
Item Details
A collection of Chinese Sun Wukong figures, teapots, and more. The pieces share the subject of Sun Wukong (孫悟空), the ‘Monkey King’ a character in many Chinese folktales and legends and is the main character of the 16th-century classical novel _Journey to the West. Included are one brass and two painted and carved wood figurines of Sun Wukong. Also included are three Yixing terracotta teapots decorated with three characters from Journey to the West including Sha Wujing (沙悟淨), Sun Wukong, and the pig-faced Zhu Bajie (猪八戒, literally ‘Pig of the Eight Prohibitions’). Each is stamped on the underside (蜀陶…). The collection is completed with Journey to the West stamps, an offset lithograph after an 1889 Japanese woodblock print of Sun Wukong by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (月岡 芳年, 1839-1892), and a book titled The Monkey King: 72 Transformations of the Mythical Hero by Vincent Zhao.
