Rick Dillingham Asymmetric Pit Fired Stoneware Vessel
Item Details
A round, asymmetric pit fired stoneware vessel by Rick Dillingham (American, 1952 – 1994). The unglazed piece was built with a coil and pinch technique and features a textured, groggy surface and a buff tone to the clay, punctuated by dark carbon flares and copper and iron mineral coloration from exposure to the pit-firing environment. The vessel is signed with an incised signature to the underside, reading ‘Dillingham, May ’75’ with an identification number, and a small label reading ‘1401.’
Dillingham spent many years in New Mexico studying Pueblo pottery and the pottery techniques and styles of the Native American cultures. He was a dealer, collector, author and curator as well as a maker, and twice received the National Endowment for the Arts ’Craftsman’s Fellowship.’ Several of his books have become standard references for this style of work.
