This painting is by listed artist Stan Galli (1912 – 2009). The painting depicts the head and extended arm of the Statue of Liberty with the skyline of New York City in the background. On the face of the white matting, which covers the wooden frame, Galli wrote “Original art for United Air Lines poster” in pencil. The painting was owned by the Galli family for over fifty years. It is signed ‘Stan Galli’ and is housed in a white matting over a wooden frame.

A copy of the original poster based on this artwork is located in the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division, Washington D.C. and carries a database notation of: “Gift of the publisher; 1964 Mar. 18’.

This painting is a special example of the 1950’s-1960’s “Golden Age of Graphic Design”. It also represents what are known as the “Mad Men” of airline poster design. By the 1950’s, flying was fun and
fashionable. Airlines provided a means for an exciting escape on short notice, or a long trip around the world. The “Mad Men” designed posters for the airlines to tempt you into traveling to exciting destinations both domestically and internationally. Some of the best known of these artists were Joseph Binder (1898-1972) and Stan Galli (1912-2009) for United Air Lines and David Klein (1918-2005) for TWA. The original posters of their artwork are highly sought after.

Stanley Galli was a prolific Californian illustrator whose work appeared in magazine stories and advertisements from the 1940s to the 1970s. In 1981, he was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Frame adding him to a list of members including Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth, and Howard Pyle.
