Vintage Framed Photographs by J.C. "Skeets" Meadors
Item Details
A selection of three vintage framed photographs of foals on Bluegrass farms taken by J.C. ‘Skeets’ Meadors. The group of photographs includes a 1958 portrait of what appears to be Nashua’s first foal, a colt, out of the mare Windmill, taken at Mereworth Farm in Lexington, Kentucky. A second photograph is a group shot of foals or weanlings. It is labeled ‘Beaumont Farm’. Now a shopping center and subdivision near the center of Lexington, the original Beaumont Farm which included 4000 acres was owned by a Keeneland founder, Hal Price Headley. The third photograph captures foals at play at Almahurst Farm. Almahurst, the birthplace of Exterminator, a Kentucky Derby winner, as well as Greyhound, the world-record setting trotter, is the only site visible in this collection of photographs that is still a working horse farm. Each photograph is labeled with a location and the name of the photographer in pencil on the mat. The pictures were obtained at the warehouse of Woodford Spears & Sons in Paris, Kentucky.
