Japanese Woodblock Prints by Kikuchi Hōbun and Imao Keinen

A pair of Japanese woodblock prints by well known shin-hanga artists. The first print is titled _Blue Birds on Rose Bush by Kikuchi Hōbun (菊池 芳文, 1862-1918). The work is signed ‘Hōbun’ (芳文) alongside a Mt. Fuji publisher seal in the lower left corner. The work depicts two sky blue and black songbirds perched on the thorny branch of a flowering white rose. The work is titled and signed in pencil on the mat. The second print is titled Bird and Moon by Imao Keinen (今尾景年, 1845-1924). The work features a graceful bird flying beneath a full moon and a delicately rendered vine. The work is signed ‘Keinen’ (景年) in-block, alongside a Mt.Fuji publisher seal. The work is titled and signed on the mat. They are presented in a wood frame with a bamboo shape, have an embossed beige mat, and have a wire to the verso for hanging.

Condition

- to fair, toning to prints and mats, wear to frames, “Blue Bird on a Rose Bush” is missing glass and has a small tear in top right edge of mat, “Bird and Moon” has a large stain top right corner of mat, tears in the dust cover of both.
