Contemporary Music and Dance Festival Poster After Saul Steinberg and Shakespeare Poster
Item Details
A contemporary music and dance festival poster after Saul Steinberg and a Shakespeare poster. The latger poster depicts a cloudy blue sky above small human figures drawn in black. They stand among music staffs accented with geometric drawings, dabs of color, and composer signatures. Listed artist Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) is known for his New Yorker covers. The heading of the poster is titled Nuits De La Fondation Maeght and refers to a festival held at the modern art museum Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence, France, near Nice. Beneath the title is the sub-heading – ‘Les Etats Unis – musique contemporaine – ballets – events – 16 juillet – 5 août 1970’, which translates as ‘American contemporary music, dance and events July 16 – August 5, 1970’. Nuits de la Fondation Maeght is also the original French title of concert recordings by the jazz artists Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor during the festival. The poster is presented in a gold tone metal frame, covered with glass, and wired ready to hang. To find out more about the Maeght Foundation, please see the additional information below. This lot also includes a poster after the iconic Iaggard and Blount portrait of Shakespeare ‘produced for The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust by Lamont’. It is housed in a black metal frame, matted, and wired ready to hang.
