19th Century Russian Icon of the Dormition of the Mother of God

A fantastically rendered and regally presented 19th century Russian icon, of the Dormition of the Mother of God, in a glass fronted wood case. Exquisitely made, the icon is painted in tempura upon a delicately carved and gold-leafed plaster ground, over board, which is bound in Russian silver. The piece is housed in a slightly newer, but complementary frame, which is unusually arched, with a single cherub’s head within the arch and molded scrollwork, as well as incised decorations, which perfectly match the ornamentation of the icon. The entire presentation is protected within a fitted wood and glass case.

- Cracks and paint loss on icon. Icon loose in frame. Ripples and chips in veneered wood on frame.
