Original Masaharu Aoyama Woodcut
Item Details
An original Japanese woodcut print by well known artist Masaharu Aoyama (1893-1869). ‘Masaharu (Seiji) Aoyama was born in Saitama prefecture. He had studied traditional ink painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. A job at the Imperial Household Museum gave him a safe income. Aoyama participated in the official Teiten exhibitions with his ink paintings. As a printmaker he was close to the Sosaku Hanga art movement. Many of his woodblock prints were self-carved and self-printed. Others were published by Ishiyama. Favorite print subjects were images of birds (via http://www.artelino.com/forum/artists.asp?art=19&alp=M).’ This print features an incredible image of an owl surrounded by dangling pine branches in the dark night air. The print is pencil signed to the bottom right hand, and marked to the lower left hand corner with a faint chop mark in red. The print is presented in a black composite frame with a single white mat to edge.
Condition
Print is slightly wavy in the frame, frame is scratched and scuffed to the edges.
